Directions to An Spidéal (Spiddal)

How do you the visitor get to our town?

An Spidéal (Spiddal), Co. na Gaillimhe (Co. Galway), Éire (Ireland)

First you must know where we are -

Our town has a number of names, depending on the language of the map you are using, so sometimes it can be difficult to find us.

In Irish or Gaelic it's An Spidéal, in English it's Spiddal or Spiddle.

Now you know where we are how are you going to get here. Let's see if I can help.

Plane    Car    Train    Bus    Bicycle

By Plane (Fly to an Irish airport and then drive)

As we don't have an airport in this town let's assume you will fly and drive.

Note: Remember to drive on the LEFT hand side of the road.

There are a number of different airports within driving distance of our town.

Dublin Airport - 145 miles, 3.5 hours. Take the M1 to the M50 Southbound. After you cross the toll bridge take the next exit on the left and the follow the sign for the N6 West. From there Galway city will be clearly signposted. The trip to Galway will take about 3 to 3.5 hours.

When you enter Galway you will see signs for Spiddal which is 12 miles West of Galway.

Shannon Airport - 69 miles, 1.75 hours. Much better than flying into Dublin as it's much closer. When you exit the airport follow the signs for Ennis or Galway. Be careful on these roads as some of them are quite small. At the moment there is a major construction project to build a proper motorway to Galway but it won't be finished before 2005 so be prepared.

When you enter Galway you will see signs for Spiddal which is 12 miles West of Galway.

Galway Airport - 15 miles, 45 minutes. Now you are pretty close to us. This airport is at Carnore only 3 miles East of Galway city on the N6.  Beware though that the plane ride from Dublin to Galway is on a pretty small (45 seat) turboprop plane and can be affected by cancellations during the winter if the weather is bad. In my opinion though it's still the best option when the weather is good.

When exiting the airport turn left. Follow the signs to Galway until you see sign for Spiddal or Salthill and then it's only another 10 miles.

By Car

From whatever port you arrive at, follow the signs for Galway city until you see one for Clifden.

Then follow the signs for Clifden until you see one for Spiddal. This will be just after you cross the river Corrib.

I've tried to show it in more detail on this map.

Basically you won't go wrong if you follow the coast road West. Spiddal is 12 miles West of Galway city.

You can always stop and ask for directions. Irish people are generally friendly and happy to help a stranger find their way.
