A touch of Debussy in the night
THIS YEAR marks the 150th birthday of the marvellous French composer Claude Debussy and two of his works will be on the programme for the next Music For Galway concert.

Three letters on my desk...
Last September I wrote a number of Diary entries on the wonderful reception that Galway extended to the survivors of the SS Athenia, torpedoed off the Donegal coast on September 3 1939, the very first day of the war. The ship was sunk by Fritz Julius Lemp, the commander of the U-30. The Athenia was obviously a passenger boat on its way with refugees from Europe to Canada. This wasn’t the start to the war that the German government wanted. Initially it denied that any of its submarines sank the Athenia, and suggested that it was sunk by the British on orders from Winston Churchill in the hope of getting America into the war.

New Honda Civic does its duty and much more
First there was the earthquake and tsunami tragedy in Japan before a further postponement due to a subsequent natural disaster in Thailand in October when a cluster of major component manufacturers that supply Honda’s global manufacturing operations fell victims to massive flooding. After all those trials, would there be tribulations? Has the new Honda Civic been worth waiting for?

Are ULA the real Left?
“Get a mandate!” barked Labour party Rottweiler, Councillor Billy Cameron. This verbal was directed at Dette McLoughlin, the chair of Galway’s United Left Alliance. However as quick as you could say travel expenses, McLoughlin replied: “You have no mandate to implement a household tax, nor to rob the poor to help the rich. If you had any principles you would resign from the Labour Party!”
