Moltaí Pleanála i leith Ghaeltacht na Gaillimhe

21 Eanáir 2003 - Bhí slua mór i láthair ag an cruinniú poiblí anocht faoi pleanála i Ghaeltacht na Gaillimhe. Bhí 75 daoine ann idir óg agus aosta chun éisteacht le Pól Ó Foighil agus a chuid moltaí pleanála i leith Ghaeltacht na Gaillimhe.

Bhí Comhairleoir Ó Foighil ag iarraidh a chuid moltaí a mhíniú do muintir na háite agus ag iarraidh fáil amach an raibh an pobal leis nó ina aghaidh. Ba é seo ceann amháin de 4 nó 5 cruinniú a bheidh ar súil ó Bearna go Carna go gairid.

Thosaigh an cruinniú le Comhairleoir Ó Foighil ag míniú An tAcht Pleanála agus Forbartha 2000. Sna Acht sin éalaíonn sé go mbeadh polasaí mar chuid de Phlean Forbartha Chontae na Gaillimhe maidir le "cosaint oidhreacht theangeolaíocht agus chultúrtha na Gaeltachta ar a n-airítear cur chun cinn na Gaeilge mar theanga phobail". Mhol Ó Foighil gur féidir an Ghaeilge a chosaint trí cead pleanála a thabhairt do cainteoirí Gaeilge amháin. Ghlac an Comhairle Chontae leis an moladh seo agus chuir siad é sa bPlean Forbartha Chontae na Gaillimhe atá á athbhreithniú faoi láthair agus a thiocfaidh i bhfeidhm do cúig bliain ag tosú i Bealtaine 2003.

Bhí roinnt ceisteanna ag na daoine i láthair faoin gcaoi ina mbeadh an Chomhairle Chontae in ann an rial seo a chuir i bhfeidhm.

Rud eile a bhí ar intinn na daoine i láthair ná an suíomh atá le díol i Bohoona le cead pleanála do 17 tithe. Bhí daoine ann ag rá go cheart do Roinn na Gaeltachta é a cheannach agus tithe a thógáil ann do dhaoine a labhair Ghaeilge.

Chríochnaigh an cruinniú le vóta ar moltaí Ó Foighil. Ni fhaca mé aon duine ag comhaireamh na lámha ach ceapaim nach raibh mórán daoine ina aghaidh.

Is féidir leat do vótáil a dhéanamh agus do thuairim féin a chuir ar an suíomh seo ins na Bulletin boards tríd an link thíos -

Planning Proposals for the Galway Gaeltacht

21 Jan 2003 - Tonight's public meeting on planning proposals for the Gaeltacht was very well attended by about 75 people. Within this group I certainly recognised the regulars who go to all the public meeting but along with them there were a lot of young faces new to the public meeting scene.

The meeting was arranged by local councillor Pól Ó Foighil to explain his controversial proposals for the protection of the Irish language by restricting planning permission to applicants who are proficient in the Irish language. He also wanted to gauge the level of support or otherwise for his proposals and is arranging these meetings throughout the areas to be affected by the proposals from Barna to Carna.

Pól began by explaining the governments planning bill of 2000 which puts the responsibility on the county councils to protect and promote the Irish language through their county development plans. He then chronicled his experience of the deterioration in the use of the Irish language as the language of the people in the Gaeltacht areas over the last 20 years.

He went on to explain how his proposal has been included into the draft for the Galway County Development plan for which people can still make submissions to the council until Feb 5th. After that date the council reviews any additional submissions and then may adjust the draft plan before publishing the final 5 year plan in April.

The meeting was then opened to the floor and a number of people asked questions about how the plan would work in practice and also praised councillor O'Foighil on his efforts to keep the Irish langauge alive in the Gaeltacht.

There was also concern expressed over the proposed sale of some of what used to be Buckley's land at Bohoona with planning permission for 17 houses. It was felt by a number of speakers that 17 new houses, probably with mostly English speakers, would swing the balance for Spiddal away from Irish as the language of the community as has happened in Furbo. People were encouraged to lobby for the purchase of that land by some organisation such as Roinn na Gaeltachta for people who spoke Irish in the home.

The meeting concluded with a show of hands to gauge a measure of the level of support for the proposals. This showed a majority of those present in favour of the proposals of councillor O'Foighil.

A copy of the reasoning and data supporting his proposals was given to everyone in attendance. It contains some interesting data and hopefully I will have a copy of it available on this site in a couple of days.

I have also started a discussion topic and opinion poll in the bulletin boards and I would appreciate your participation in this discussion.

Clan Éire - Cosúíl linne

Bhí scéal inniu san Irish Times faoi scéim áitiúil in IT ar a glaoitear ClanÉire Connected Communities Project. An aidhm atá ag an scéim ná network de seirbhísí áitiúil a chuir ar fáil trí IT agus teicneolaíocht a úsáid.

Tá 5 baile sa réigiún toir theas roghnaithe le haghaidh an pilot scheme seo. Beidh suíomh ar an idirlíon ag na bailte agus na seirbhísí seo a leathan as ar fáil - nuacht áitiúil, eolaire áitiúil, eolas ar gclubanna, díolachán earraí, seirbhísí do thuismitheoirí, tionscnamh do na comhlachtaí áitiúil.

Beidh na daoine sna bailte in ann an eolas a fháil ón idirlíon nó tríd a gcuid fón póca.

Tá and t-airgead ag teach ón Regional Programme of Innovative Actions san EU agus á láimhseáil ag an Southern and Eastern Regional Assembly.

Anois an píosa is fearr. Tá €300,000 ag dul ar an scéim seo. Sin €60,000 an baile.

Scríobh me email láithreach go dtí an Border, Midlands and West Assembly ag lorg €60,000 le haghaidh AnSpideal.net. Nuair a thagann an seic déanfaidh mé an suíomh i bhfad níos fearr.

ClanEire - Just like us

An article in today's Irish Times gives some details on a regional IT project  called the ClanEire Connected Communities pilot project. The aim of the project is to bring the 5 communities in the South Eastern region into the information society by encouraging them to use IT and technology to create a local network and services.

The services to be included in the community websites will include local news, event promotion, community directory, discussion forums, local club information,  training, parental services,  buy and sell and business promotions.

Participants will be encouraged to access such services via the internet or mobile phone.

Funding has been provided under the Regional Programme of Innovative Actions and is being co financed by the European union and managed by the Southern and Eastern Regional Assembly.

Now the good part. The funding involved is a whopping €300,000 for the 5 towns or €60,000 each.

I immediately sent my email request for €60,000 to the Border, Midlands and West assembly who would be the corresponding group to cover Spiddal. As soon as the cheque arrives you will see huge improvements in the AnSpideal.net site.

Race Results

02/11/02 - An excellent night was had by all last night in the Caladh Mór as far as I could see. There was a great turnout for the Race Night in aid of the Special Olympics and although things got off to a late start they also had a late ending to make up for it.

This punter's bad luck streak which started at the Galway races during the Summer continued last night which meant I ended up donating to the Special Olympics find with every race.

The master of ceremonies, Brendan Shaughnessy did a great job and his knowledge of the punters and the Gaeilge certainly helped.

The eighth race was a special event where each of the horses was auctioned off the the audience. There was great duelling of egos there as local business people bid to out do each other. The result was an additional €1185 euro to the fund before any betting took place. Tiernan O'Brien was the lucky winner of that race and took with him a prize of a weekend away for 2 in Sligo.

After that race things got a bit rushed and as far as I could tell races 9 and 10 were skipped as it was getting late.

Congratulations to the Committee for a great night of fun and thanks to all the sponsors and punters.

Special Olympics 2003

The World Special Olympics will be held outside the US for the first time in 2003 and Ireland is the venue. World athletes will be gathering in Dublin from 20 - 27 June to take part in these games with everyone hoping to return home with an Olympic medal.

To help the foreign athletes get acclimatised with the country and to give them a taste of the culture and atmosphere of Ireland, towns and villages throughout the country have been chosen

as host towns for the visitors some days of the games.

Spiddal has been chosen as the host town for the athletes from the Cameroon's in Africa and the Spiddal people are getting prepared already to make sure the visitors receive a great welcome while they are with us.

The Games committee in Spiddal are looking for local people to do voluntary work while the visitors are staying in the area. Anyone interested in taking part in this historic occasion should contact Tomás Ó Conghaile, Cré Dhubh, An Spidéal or any member of the local committee so that they can be registered in time.

Race Night

While the athletes are staying in Spiddal the public has to take care of various things such as accommodation, travel and entertainment.

In order to help with these expenses the committee has organised a Race Night in the Caladh Mór on Friday the 1st November. They are hoping for all possible support from the Cois Fharraige public for this fund raising night.
